Frequently Asked Questions

Product & Clinical Use

A customizable, anatomically engineered orthosis designed for post-operative and trauma care of the lower extremity, used by orthopaedic, plastic, vascular, and neurology teams.
Open and closed fractures (calcaneal, pilon/talar, tibia/fibular, ankle, distal femur, tibial plateau, complex knee), wounds, grafts, fasciotomies, flaps, nerve injuries, contracture prevention (TBI, CVA, SCI), multiple trauma, PVD/diabetes-related cases, and general orthopaedic conditions including plantar fasciitis and heel spurs.
Yes. It is available in three pediatric sizes (Youth, Child, Toddler) in addition to four adult sizes.
No. The standard splint is engineered for light touchdown pressure only (up to 40 lbs). EFs will tolerate no weight bearing, that is, non-weight bearing (NWB).
The Seattle Splint features a malleable hospital-grade alloy shell, an anatomical contour, a deep heel pocket for pressure relief, and quick-release straps for tool-free access during wound care and therapy.

Sizing & Fitting

Use the sizing chart on the Seattle Splint page, which references patient height, unisex shoe size, and calf length. For adult patients receiving a Thigh Extension, calf length is the sole determinant.
Prioritize safety with bending knee to get on/off a low seat (such as a toilet) and toes being protected (to prevent tripping). Contact us for clinical support if you remain unsure.
Allow a hand’s width between the back of the knee and the top of the splint shell, verify the patient’s toes do not extend past the distal edge, and confirm full knee flexion is unhindered.
Yes. The malleable alloy shell allows tool-free customization of calf width, ankle width, and dorsiflexion angle (up to 5° additional dorsiflexion) while the splint is in use.
Your patients will not have optimal fit, which could very likely effect safe mobility and positive outcomes.

Customization & Components

The Thigh Extension (converts the tibial, ankle and foot splint into a Seattle Long Leg configuration) and the Anterior Shell (for high-tone management and pressure distribution).
Separately, as an add-on module. It fits any adult-sized Seattle Splint.
The EF Series is engineered to clear hardware from distal tibia, pilon, and calcaneal external fixators.
If you order the EF Series with bilateral ankle cutouts for all patients, you lose the structural support the Standard Seattle Splint offers for long-term usage. We recommend stocking both configurations and matching to patient need.
The flexibility of the slide-hook locking mechanism rests against the webbing and locks it in place by pulling, rather than relying on friction or adhesion. It holds up well for long-term usage. (See our buckle-use demonstration video.)

Training & Support

Yes. If our video demonstrations do not meet your educational questions and needs, call us to schedule a session.

Yes. The Videos page hosts the full clinical training overview (10:00), the Thigh Extension fitting module (5:12), a fitting-for-optimal-healing video (3:50), and a buckle-use demonstration (0:50).

Ordering & Logistics

The Seattle Splint is fabricated and distributed by PFS Med, Inc., an independent manufacturer based in Springfield, Oregon. Materials are sourced where quality product is available, but the majority of manufacturing and production is done in-house at the Springfield shop.
